The Farm and the Role: 

This is a long term position on a top dairy farm. It offers exceptional opportunities for development.

With modern facilities, this farm has a herd of high EBI cross bred cows. Milking is completed twice daily in a 60 point rotary milking parlour.

There is a definite plan for progression for the successful candidate here. Our client has a clear vision of the skills/experience that will be provided to ensure excellent all round knowledge and high competence levels.

Initially, the focus will be on cow husbandry skills and the successful candidate will take on the main responsibility for milking, with a natural progression to grassland management skills, and onward then to people management and people management skills.

Specific role requirements will include:

  • Working with the farm manager to allocate pasture on a daily basis, within the bounds of the feed budget and either responsible for or assisting with farm walks to collect pasture growth information. 
  • Understanding the feed budget process and assist with completing feed budgets as required.
  • Feeding out and setting up break fences.  
  • Supervising milking and milking as required insuring milking is efficient and stress free for people and animals. 
  • Helping to ensure only milk of the finest quality is presented for collection. Must contribute to dairy hygiene and achievement of milk quality.
  • Maintaining hygiene and cleanliness standards in and around the dairy.
  • Identifying and treating mastitis in cows.
  • Identifying and treating lameness in cows.
  • Identifying other animal health problems and either reporting these immediately to the farm manager or treating.
  • Assisting to achieve stock targets. 
  • Assisting with calf rearing as needed.
  • Keeping records of all mastitis treatments given and ensuring animals are marked according to the farm systems.

  • Wish to progress to Herdsperson level or further develop their skills and experience at this level.
  • Excellent team players; motivated and positive approach.
  • Genuine interest and commitment to stock care.
  • Some experience of calf rearing.
  • Some experience in pasture management.
  • Some experience in feed management.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accurate record keeping.
