Victoria, Australia: We are seeking a Assistant herd Manager.

This role will be involved in all the practical duties of a large dairy farm. Such activities will include tractor operation, fencing and irrigating also some skills in repairs and mantenence would be required. This job would be a 9 to 5 job with more hours depending on the time of year.A good attitude to work and good work ethic is essential


The farm is a pasture based irrigated dairy farm.

Herd:
The herd comprises of 800 milkers with enough replacements to take milker numbers to 900 next year. The herd calves in two seasons Spring and Autumn. Production is around 8500 litres per cow annually or around 6 million litres for the farm. The herds diet is predominately pasture, but quite a lot of grain is fed in the dairy as well as silage that is fed on a feed pad.  Cows are milked using a 50 unit rotary, that has a auto id system that manages individual cows. The biggest issues the herd faces are:
1) Lameness 2) Mastitas 3) Fertility Farm:
The milking area consists of 300 hectares of irrigated pastures consisting of ryegrass and lucerne. We have an computer operated automated flood irrigation system with pipes in the ground. We are trying to grow as much feed as we can year round, some pasture is dried off over the summer months and then needs to be re-sown in the autumn.
Our biggest issues with the farm are:
1) Water availability
2) Pasture production

Average Hours/Day: 8-10 hours Average Hours/Week: 40-50 hours.A good attitude to work and good work ethic is essential
The supervision of this position will be performed by the owners.
